WARP Lecture & Workshop:

Yoonha Kim - Wearing Sallim

4 pm / Central Institute Hermann von Helmholtz Zentrum für Kulturtechnik (HZK) | Campus Nord – Haus 3 | Philippstr. 13 | 10115 Berlin

How would it feel to wear clothes that correspond to the flow of the cosmos? The term “sallim” in Korean refers to the act of giving life, maintaining a household, and enlivening. To propose an alternative material culture that prioritizes caring, some individuals living in the capitalocene era have reimagined Korean sartorial heritage by altering technological tools through the lens of sallim and Korean cosmology. This talk invites you to try on hanbok and fabulate with the sallimly worlding that it represents.

Yoonha Kim is an anthropologist with a design background interested in the relationship between technology and locality in the age of the planetary. As a pre-doctoral researcher in the project, »Object Space Agency« within the cluster of excellence Matters of Activity as well as the Centre for Anthropological Research on Museums and Heritage (CARMAH) at the Humboldt-University of Berlin, she looks into East Asian cosmology and its relation with technical objects through the constantly reimagined Korean sartorial heritage. Her project is based on the Korean notion of Sallim (enlivening) which construes anthropos as in-between beings within the multispecies worlding. From filmmaking to immersive fabulation workshops, she explores multimodal forms of anthropology, which includes co-curating Stretching Materialities exhibition (2021-2022, Berlin) and co-organizing Stretching Senses School.
